Numismatic Collection

The Numismatic Collection of the Split City Museum was formed through the efforts of individuals and institutions, such as the City Library and the Archaeological Museum in Split, which collected materials for the future museum. Some items in the Collection were also acquired through archaeological excavations.

The Collection ranges from Antiquity to the 20th century and features coins and other forms of currency that were used in the city of Split. It includes both minted and paper money, as well as a selection of tokens and commemorative coins.

Zbirka numizmatike

Ancient coins, medieval currency, and Venetian coinage make up a significant part of the Collection, with Roman coins, particularly those from the time of Diocletian, being the most numerous.

The autonomous currency of the city of Split, known as the bagatini, which was minted from the early 12th century until 1357, is also represented in the Collection. The silver coin known as Hrvoje’s coin, struck in Split by Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, Duke of Split, Viceroy of Dalmatia and Croatia, Grand Duke of Bosnia, and Prince of the Donji Kraji, features on its reverse the image of St. Domnius and an inscription naming the city of Split.
