Textile and Fashion Accessories Collection
The Textiles and Fashion Accessories Collection was founded in 1948 and has been gradually expanded through acquisitions and donations. It comprises items that reflect the clothing styles and everyday life in Split across previous centuries. The collection features men’s and women’s garments, underclothing, footwear, children’s attire, jewellery, and fashion accessories, including handbags, hats, parasols, gloves, and spectacles.
The Textiles and Fashion Accessories Collection additionally contains church furnishings, liturgical garments, and domestic interior items such as rugs, tablecloths, placemats, and bedding. It also includes textile samples, ribbons from Ante Trumbić’s funeral wreaths, and ribbons used during the unveiling of the monument to Gregory of Nin. The Collection further comprises flags associated with significant political events. The oldest objects, dating from the 16th century, are pieces of jewellery. The oldest garments in the collection include a women’s bodice from the early 18th century, silk frock coats and waistcoats from the late 18th century, and two dresses from the early 19th century.
The Collection also seeks to preserve clothing and fashion accessories from the city’s more recent history, especially from the second half of the 20th century, to provide insight into how historical, social, and economic developments in Split have influenced dress and fashion.
