About the Library
The Split City Museum Library was established in 1925 within the City Library, housed in Bernardi Palace, when a space was designated for the Museum-Historical Department. After World War II, the Museum gradually became an independent institution and moved to the Gothic-Renaissance Grand Papalić Palace. Officially recognised at that time, the Museum also developed its own reference library, with its initial collection formed from books and journals selected according to museum criteria to serve as the foundation of the new museum’s holdings.
Services
The Split City Museum Library operates as a semi-open library. While primarily intended for internal use, its collections are available to external users under certain conditions. The library’s holdings include over 11,000 catalogue entries and 42 periodical titles covering all aspects of city and general history (including art history, sociology, and public health).
Its newspaper collection comprises most volumes of Novo doba, Pučki list, and Jadranska straža, as well as issues of Slobodna Dalmacija from its earliest editions.
Library materials are acquired through donations and purchases, with the majority obtained through exchanges with similar institutions.
